Miss Lucy leaves Hailsham

Never Let Me Go

Miss Lucy leaves Hailsham in an abrupt announcement that makes her absence permanent and reshapes the students’ final days at the school. Recounted by Kathy as a memory, the event moves from classroom rumor to official confirmation, then into the unsettled relationships of Tommy, Ruth, and Kathy; the reason for Miss Lucy’s departure is not explained in this account.

The Announcement

The news broke midway through the morning, at the end of another Culture Briefing, a role-playing class that left the students both excited and worried. As they filed out, Charlotte F. rushed in with word that Miss Lucy had left Hailsham. Mr. Chris, who had been leading the class and apparently already knew, shuffled away guiltily before the students could question him. At first they were unsure whether Charlotte was repeating a rumor, but the details soon made the departure certain.

The news had originated in another Senior class. Its students had expected Music Appreciation with Miss Lucy, but Miss Emily was there instead and said she would take the lesson. For roughly twenty minutes, the class proceeded normally. Then, while speaking about Beethoven and apparently in mid-sentence, Miss Emily stopped to announce that Miss Lucy had left Hailsham and would not return. The class ended several minutes early; Miss Emily hurried away with a preoccupied frown, and the students carried the news out with them.

Kathy Tries to Reach Tommy

Kathy immediately went to find Tommy because she wanted him to hear the news from her first. In the courtyard, however, she saw him already among a circle of boys, listening and nodding as they discussed the departure. The other boys seemed animated, perhaps even excited, while Tommy’s eyes looked empty. Kathy’s attempt to be the one to tell him therefore fails before she can speak, leaving her to witness his reaction from the edge of the group.

The timing gives the announcement a personal charge. The day before, Kathy and Tommy had spoken about his uncertainty over getting back together with Ruth and the need to think carefully about what came next. Their conversation had been interrupted, and Kathy left feeling she had somehow let Ruth down. She never learned what effect the talk had on Tommy: Miss Lucy’s departure became the next day’s news, and the moment she had hoped to share with him was already gone.

Reconciliation and Aftermath

That same evening, Tommy and Ruth got back together. A few days later, Ruth found Kathy and thanked her for having sorted things out so well. Kathy doubted that she had helped much, but Ruth would not accept that qualification. The reconciliation thus followed Kathy’s conversation with Tommy and her effort to reach him after the announcement, although Kathy herself remained unsure how much either action had contributed.

Ruth’s gratitude changed Kathy’s standing with her: Kathy was firmly back in Ruth’s good books. Their renewed ease, and Tommy and Ruth’s reconciliation, persisted through the final days at Hailsham. Miss Lucy’s departure is therefore presented not only as a sudden institutional loss, but also as the point around which a private sequence of concern, missed timing, and renewed closeness gathers. The account confirms that Miss Lucy will not return, while leaving the explanation for her departure unstated.
